The brief for this commission was to create a house sign for a property that a friend of mine was renting at the time. This is the wall next to the front door where it was to be fixed.

My first thought was simply to take a piece of wood and carve the name on it but the client wanted something a little different. Between us we came up with the idea of a row of sparrows sat on the sign.
The next thing to do was to find images for a number of sparrows in different positions. The internet is a fantastic resource for images!

After having carved five sparrows in different positions I decided that they should be on a separate log rather than the main piece. This is the first log I tried but it didn't have enough of a bend in it somehow.
This is the second attempt which gives it a bit more life.

All that remained was to find a piece of wood for the actual sign and to join them with dowels and mount the resulting carving on the wall.
