I've started by turning a Maple blank with space in the back to take a mirror. This is the first mirror I've done like this and it's much easier than carving out the space, as long as you have a circular mirror.
I've divided it into 24 so I can do a swirling pattern on it somehow but at the moment I'm not too sure how it will work out.
