Bowl with Hands
I got a call one day saying that the Cherry tree in the churchyard had been chopped down, and if I wanted some of it I needed to come and collect it.
I ended up with a boot full of lovely wood.
I'd been thinking about how to combine turning and carving and had a rather crazy idea of creating a bowl held by hands - life size of course.
The wood from the church gave me the opportunity.
The first thing to do was to prepare a piece ready to be turned. This piece here has a diameter of 300mm and is the same high. Quite a large lump.
Having put it onto my lathe and turned it on I quickly realised it wasn't going to work. My lathe doesn't have any speed control so it very quickly got out of control and shook the whole thing.
Luckily I have a neighbour who not only has a very nice lathe with speed control, but also is a very experienced woodturner
Here he is with the piece on the lathe. I did some as well - honestly!
Here it is after the turning has been completed. The inside of the bowl has been formed and a little bit of the outside.
All that's needed now is to find where the hands are within the mass of wood left over.
It's a gradual process, especially with a carving you haven't done before.
